Level 2: Basic Clinical Skills and Theory in Witnessing Sandtray Work in Play Therapy

In this workshop, participants discuss and work with symbolic meaning and basic theoretical ideas. There are opportunities to create sandtrays in the presence of an observer (workshop partner) and to practice skills using the symbolic language of play. Participants also explore the core issues of play therapy in the sandtray process.  Prerequisites: Level 1.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the stages of a sandtray play therapy session. 

2. Discuss how transference, countertransference, & co-transference may influence a sandtray or play therapy session.  

3. List at least 5 responsibilities of a therapist when conducting a sandtray or play therapy session.

4. Explain 3 aspects of documentation that should be considered in sandtray or play therapy.

5. Prepare 3 reattunement techniques for when mis-attunement occurs in a sandtray play therapy environment. 

6. Discuss at least 3 ways in which sandtray and play therapy can encourage interpersonal integration.
